NYSLAA-L Email List Instructions
Join the NYSLAA-L email list (also called subscribing)
Send an email message to: lyris@cornell.edu
The body of the message should only be:
join NYSLAA-L "your name"
Your name (include the quotation marks) is the name you want to be available to the list's administrators.
Important:
  • You must send this message from the email address where you want to receive the e-list's messages.
  • The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code.
  • Your name must appear in double quotes.
A short time after sending this message, you may receive a confirmation request. Follow the instructions in the request (which involves replying to the message or clicking on a web link). The confirmation process helps ensure that only people who want to join a list receive the list's messages. Please note that you may not be added to the e-list immediately.
Sending Messages
Sending a message to the members of NYSLAA-L is almost exactly like sending any other email message.
You simply put the NYSLAA-L list address in the To: field.
To: NYSLAA-L@cornell.edu
Messages should be kept as small as possible. Many people access their email through slow connections or small devices (like cell phones), or have mailboxes with size limits. Instead of sending attachments to the entire list, put the file on a web site for people to retrieve. If you post a message larger than 1 MB (including attachments), it will be returned to you with an error message.
Replying to List Messages
  • Choose the reply command for your email program.
  • Check the "To", "Cc", and "Bcc" fields to see where the reply will be sent. Edit these entries as necessary so that the reply will go only to the recipients you intend.
  • Edit the subject line as necessary to be informative, especially if you receive list messages in digest format.
  • Edit the quoted text to make your message as short as possible, including only the relevant text from the original message. In some cases there is no need to include any quoted text.
  • Type your reply.
  • Double-check all parts of your message (recipients, subject line, quoted text, and new text), then send your message.
If you have already "joined" NYSLAA-L, you may send one of the following commands to lyris@cornell.edu in the body of your email:
Change your settings for NYSLAA-L so that you receive each message individually. set NYSLAA-L mail ack
Change your settings for NYSLAA-L so that you receive a digest of each day's messages in one piece of email. set NYSLAA-L digest
Change your settings for NYSLAA-L so that you temporarily do not receive any messages from the list. set NYSLAA-L nomail
Start receiving messages again, if you have temporarily stopped your subscription. Use either:
set NYSLAA-L mail ack
or
set NYSLAA-L digest
Leave - Stop receiving messages from NYSLAA-L (also called unsubscribing)
Send an email message to: lyris@cornell.edu
The body of the message should only be:
leave NYSLAA-L
Important:
  • The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code.
  • You should send this message from the email address where you want to stop receiving the e-list's messages.
If you cannot send mail from that address, or if you have other problems leaving a list, contact the list's administrators.
